Port Pollensa

Puerto Pollensa

In 1959 Don Javier Marichalar, Marquis de Ciria, began to bring together a group of people interested in founding a yacht club in Puerto Pollensa. At that time there was no clubhouse or installations of any kind. The founding members had their first formal meeting in 1961, and contributed money towards building a quay in the port.
Permission was requested to occupy part of the sea at the end of the Old Quay, and this was granted by the Ministry of Public Works on May 2nd, 1962. Don Plácido Alvarez Builla, Civil Governor of the Balearics, in his capacity as Provincial Sports Delegate, helped us obtain the permit and a subsidy of 50% of the building costs for the new quay, the rest was paid for with the funds of the founding members. A permit was then obtained to build a little hut and bar. At this time the Marquis de Ciria ceased to be president, and General Antonio Llorente took over.
Later a permit was obtained to build a more substantial clubhouse, that was designed by Dieter von Bach, architect, who later became president for a number of years. The club burgee dates from this period. Regattas were organized in the Snipe class, with a fleet of these dinghies which was presented to the club by a founder member, Don Basilio Gurrea. Later a permit was obtained to build a small exterior jetty, with which the number of moorings increased by more than thirty.
In 1982 the club was included in the Register of Sports Associations and Federations created by the Higher Sports Council, and three years later in the register of the Balearic Government Council for Sports and Culture. Since the 1970s the club moorings began to be insufficient, and work began on successive projects for a larger marina.
These projects required several years of negotiations, and finally a permit was granted by the Public Works Councillor, Don Jeroni Saiz, in February 1987, during the presidency of Don Felipe Bellini. This was the last building permit granted for a marina in the Balearic islands. The building work on the marina of 375 moorings which we see today, was completed in 1989.
