What makes you happy? by Sally Trotman

There is much written these days about following your bliss, doing what makes you happy and spending time living your passions…but what if you’re not sure exactly makes you happy? Or perhaps lots of things make you happy…but you don’t have time to fit everything in. Having a fulfilling job is important, along with creating better relationships, better health and a better body…but how exactly do we have the time to balance all of this? With so much written about developing the ideal work/life balance, it’s easy to feel guilty if you’ve missed out one aspect of the ideal daily routine. I think it’s time we took the pressure off and stopped trying so hard to be perfect! Perhaps a job you like well enough, a relationship which makes you feel good most of the time and a home where you feel comfortable is in fact more than enough to make you happy. Are well all striving for perfection?

Perhaps it is about how you view the things you have in your life already. You may be familiar with the quote ‘love what you have and have what you love’. I think this is an important to remember. Of course if you have a goal that is important to you, go for it with all your heart. Feeling excited about your future and your dreams is a vital part of life, but maintaining a constant feeling of excitement as you do the the washing or clean the floor can at times be a challenge. So perhaps there is a new goal to consider; to release the pressure. To wake up in the morning and just breathe. It is too easy to begin the day with a head full of your to do list, so just sit up and breathe. As you go about your day continue to just breathe. If you feel stressed, breathe, if you feel sad, breathe, and if you feel excited, breathe. I might be sounding a bit Zen with all of this but if you take your time with each task, listen to what is being said to you, and most importantly, listen to yourself. If you ask yourself often, what do I need or is this good for me, you will feel better and make some great choices. So ditch the vision of perfection and start honoring yourself, imperfections and all. Slow down, take time for you and most importantly know that you can be happy in each moment simply by choosing to feel good and knowing you are always doing the best you can.

Do you believe you deserve to be happy?

Of course, you will probably answer yes straight away! However, on closer inspection of the various different aspects of your life, it may be helpful to acknowledge where you are causing yourself some suffering. Do you struggle in the areas of finances, relationships or health? It’s amazing how we prevent ourselves from being truly happy by holding onto limiting beliefs. Consider for a moment one area of your life which is causing you stress. Ask yourself what limiting beliefs you hold in this area. How are you viewing this area of your life? When you look at the negatives in a person or situation they grow. If you look for just one positive aspect in the situation, this will grow and you will feel better.

We cause ourselves suffering in many ways, through negative self talk, with thoughts such as ‘ I could have done that better’, ‘why did I do that ten years ago’,’what is the point’ and so on. We all talk to ourselves in this way from time to time (some of us more often than others!) and these thoughts dis-empower you. The key to releasing suffering is to chose positive, empowering thoughts, followed by inspired action.

So if for example you don’t enjoy your work, look at the positive aspects you do enjoy (there will be at least one thing!) and then look for another, and another. You will quickly find quite a few. You will notice your mood changing, a little smile developing perhaps, and a feeling of expansion. It may well be that it’s time to find a new job, and you will certainly attract one if you are feeling positive about your current situation. So remain focused on what inspires you in your current job, and you will quickly attract an even better job for you.

The energies of this year are helping you to hear your truth, to acknowledge what is right for you, what is empowering for you. When you listen to your truth you feel at peace. Negative, self critical talk is not your truth. That is your ego. Acknowledge this aspect of yourself and choose truthful words and thoughts. The truth is always positive, peaceful and empowering. We create separation in our lives when we come from fear. So how do you recognise when you are coming from fear? Simply notice how you feel. If you have a sinking feeling, or a feeling of heaviness around a certain situation you are coming from fear. For example, if you are afraid of flying, you will feel tense or heavy when you think about it. Now change those thoughts. Consider all the wonderful aspects of flying, such as being able to visit new places, time to yourself to read during the journey, being waited on, watching movies…feel your energy change as you focus on the positives.

The same principles need to be applied in all areas of your life. We sabotage and dis-empower ourselves by focusing on the negatives, so reclaim your power today and find the ray of hope, the positive in every situation and circumstance you find yourself in. This positive energy will then enable you to attract even better situations into your life, and before you know it you will be living the abundant, joyful, blissful life that is your birth right. Put an end to suffering today. It’s only in your mind and you can chose what you think in every moment. So chose positive, empowering thoughts in each moment and miracles will occur..

Gratitude, lightness and love

Take a moment to give thanks for everything in your life right now. Be grateful for the chair you are sitting on whilst reading this, and for the education you received so that you can read this piece! Continue to give thanks for all the wonderful things in your life RIGHT now. As you count your blessings you will feel lighter and free. Now think of someone in your life who makes you laugh. Remember the moments of laughter you have had with this person and notice how your body relaxes as you recall this positive memory. Let this feeling fill your whole body. You may find yourself smiling as you remember this moment! Finally, think of someone you love. Really experience that feeling of love at a deep level. Feel your heart filling with love. Now as you bring your focus back to your breath, think of three colours that you associate with the feelings of gratitude, lightness and love. See these colours burning brightly in your heart, and carry these colours with you. As you go through your day give thanks for everything in your life, and practice bringing more lightness, humour and love to all your relationships. As you do so, your life will change because thoughts create reality, and imagine the new reality you will be creating as you focus only on abundance, lightness and love?
